CRPF: Central Reserve Police Force

CRPF stands for Central Reserve Police Force ( CRPF). This is an armed paramilitary unit that is the largest Central Armed Police Force in India. CRPF operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Governmentof India. Its primary mission is to support the federal and state governmentsin maintaining the law and order in their respective territories. Its headquarters are at New Delhi, India. It is the government that India has established the CRPR academy to educate young candidates who join the CRPF. As of July 2017, Sh Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar is the Director General of CRPF.

  • The name CRPF comes in reference to CRP, the Crown Representative's Police (CRP) that was established on July 27, 1939, to protect the British people who resided in the states that are sensitive to India.
  • In 1949, under the CRPF Act The CRP was renamed CRPF.
  • On the 21st October in 1959, a tiny CRPF patrol was attacked by the Chinese soldiers. 10 of twenty CRPF troops sacrificedtheir life to defend the country. To honor the martyrdom of these soldiers, the date of October 21 is observed as Police CommemorationDay.
  • In the 1960s, most Battalions from state forces were amalgamated with CRPF.
  • In 1965, CRPF was guarding the India-Pakistan Border . Later, BSF became the first to guard the border.
  • It played a key function in preventing militant activities in Punjab during the 1980s and the insurgency at Tripura during 1990s.
  • In 1992, a specialized section that was part of CRPF (Rapid Action Force) was established by converting 10 unattached battalions of CRPF to deal with riots.
  • in 1986 the very first Mahila Battalion in CRPF, the 88(M) Bn was formed to deal with women's agitations.
  • In 2001 Indian Parliamentattack, CRPF killed all the five terrorists who were involved of the assault. In the same year it was designated the top security force of India.
  • The year 2008 saw the creation of Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) is one of the specialties of CRPF was formed to fight the naxal gangs.
